| Before you start packing, don’t forget to make a detailed list. This will help you organize your move – and maybe even think of a few more things that you don’t need.
First Things First
Decide what you will need to pack separately, i.e. items you will need during the moving process and your essentials. Make a list of the items that you will need to set aside. If you are making a long-distance move, make sure you have things such as maps, prescriptions and toys for the children. You will also need items that will need to be used in your new home including cleaning supplies, light bulbs and tools, as well as essential items such as food, kitchen utensils and dishes. Also, be sure to pack a suitcase with several days of clothes and toiletries you may need. Also, don’t forget important papers – medical records, insurance policies, etc.
Write it Down!
Before you pack anything, you should develop a system for keeping everything documented. Create a list on the computer and record the contents you are moving – or you can also keep your list written in a notebook. Number each box and keep a record of what is contained in each box on your list. Don’t be afraid to give too much detail. For example, instead of just writing “kitchen supplies” give more detail, such as “flowered dishes” or “coffee cups.” This will help you prioritize what you want to unpack first. DON’T LOSE THIS LIST!
Get in the Zone
You should probably designate a space in your home as the Moving Zone. This is where you keep all your packed boxes, labels, markers, tape, any other packing supplies you will need, and – most importantly – your list! As you pack, put similar items together. Try to pack items together that need to be unpacked immediately, or pack items together that can wait awhile before unpacking. Also, try to designate things by location. So, instead of packing all your towels in one box, pack your master bathroom towels together and the guest bathroom towels in a separate box.
By following these simple methods, you will be well on your way to a great move. Making a list will help you keep all your items in a safe and organized place, and will make unpacking your new home more bearable and will make the move go much more quickly
