The Hottest ZIP Codes in America is a monthly report that highlights the ZIP codes seeing the most activity. The June 2026 report examines moves that occurred in May 2026.
A ZIP code’s “hotness” is assessed in three ways:
- Move volume per capita: the number of moves with a destination in the ZIP code per 1,000 people.
- Total move volume: the absolute number of moves with a destination in the ZIP code.
- Biggest month-over-month increases: ZIP codes with the largest jumps in moving activity compared to the previous month.
For the purposes of this report, all moves with a destination address within a ZIP code are counted, including those where the move originated in the same ZIP code. This approach captures the total moving activity within each area, reflecting both local and inbound relocations.

Clinton, SC (29325) led all U.S. ZIP codes with an 80% surge in May move volume relative to April. Michigan was the month’s standout surge state, with Alpena (49707, +61%) and Boyne City (49712, +52%) both cracking the top 5. Mississippi continued its momentum with Jackson (39206, +55%) and Bay Saint Louis (39520, +47%) both in the top 10. What the Data Means
May 2026’s rankings reflect the shift of the spring moving season. The emergence of a tied #1 between a Colorado suburb and a Florida coastal market reflects the dual nature of current migration demand: affordability-driven moves to growing metros and lifestyle-driven moves to amenity-rich communities. The appearance of Chicago in the total-volume top 10 is a notable data point worth monitoring as well, since it may signal early signs of urban re-engagement after years of net outflow.
Texas continues to dominate total volume while its per-capita numbers cool slightly relative to the winter months. This is consistent with normal seasonal patterns in a high-growth state where the denominator (population) is itself growing rapidly. The outsized monthly gains in smaller Southern markets like Clinton, SC; Bainbridge, GA; and Bay Saint Louis, MS, suggest that affordability migration is reaching smaller markets across the Southeast.
Methodology
MovingPlace is a leading authority on U.S. residential migration trends. With access to millions of verified move records each year, we have the data and expertise to track where Americans are relocating and identify emerging patterns in communities nationwide. Our rankings are based on proprietary data from Porch Group, which tracks detailed move information, including origin and destination ZIP codes, for millions of residential moves across the U.S. each year.
To identify the hottest ZIP codes in the U.S., MovingPlace analyzed proprietary data from PGM. The study ranks ZIP codes by moves per capita, highlighting where the highest number of new residents moved in May 2026 per 1,000 current residents. For the total move volume rankings, ZIP codes are ranked by the absolute number of moves with a destination in that ZIP code during the same period.
For the purposes of this report, all moves with a destination address within a ZIP code are counted, including those where the move originated in the same ZIP code. This approach captures the total moving activity within each area, reflecting both local and inbound relocations.
