In August 2026 we pulled Google review data for 3,503 moving companies across 89 US metros: 576 locations of national franchise brands and 2,927 independent local movers, carrying 1,740,828 reviews. Here is the whole industry, by rating:

Fewer than four in a hundred moving companies are rated below 4 stars. That is why just looking up star ratings doesn’t guarantee you’re finding a high quality mover.

The Review Sites Don’t Even Agree With Each Other

When you look at multiple review sites, the story becomes even murkier. Here’s what we found for one national brand, in one month, across the main places people check:

The platforms are not contradicting each other so much as measuring different things: companies ask happy customers for a Google review at the end of the job, Yelp filters aggressively, and a page nobody maintains collects mostly complaints. The bottom line is that scores are not comparable across platforms, so you cannot use them to decide on a mover.

And the National Name Doesn’t Buy a Better Move

There is a reasonable instinct behind choosing a national name. A company with locations in every city, matching trucks and decades of advertising feels like the safer bet than a local outfit you have never heard of: someone bigger to answer to if the move goes wrong, and a reputation you would assume they protect. So we checked whether the data backed it up.

There’s basically no difference in the average star rating, with the independents slightly better on average. There is a structural reason for that: both are largely the same kind of business. Most national moving brands are franchise systems or agent networks, so the location serving your city is typically an independently owned local moving company operating under the national name.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, for example, reports more than 430 independently owned and operated locations. Van lines work slightly differently, but it’s essentially the same story: their local agents are independent moving companies that handle interstate moves under the van line’s name and local moves under their own.

Either way, booking a national brand for a local move usually means hiring an independent local mover that has paid for the name.
